Stitching and Perspective Control Example 2:

Another method for capturing an image where you need to deal with the shear size of large structures is the method of stitching.  Simply this is taking several photos of a large scene and then using software to overlay or stich them together.  The example used here is of York cathedral.  Below are the photos that were stitched together to make the final image.  The best way to create images for stitching, is to use a tripod fitted with a panoramic attachment and carefully cover the area with multiple exposures, but you can get very acceptable results hand holding covering the area.  Again the first step is to do standard lens and colour correction with in your raw converter (such as Camera Raw) all images needed to be treated the same although custom exposure and shadow correction can improve the final image.  Again my main tool is the merge tool in CS6, but similar tools are available.  Usually the spherical or cylindrical algorithms work best.  After the stitched image is produced (see below), can then use the transform tools can be used to remove any distortion that needs additional correction.
